6 Tips For Building A Stellar Security Team

Building a stellar security team takes time. You need the right people to take on your unique security needs.

With so many people who claim to be security guards or have a security background, it’s important to look at all possible candidates before making a decision.

It’s one of the reasons to use a security guard company that already takes care of all the background work for you. This way, all you have to do is decide on your security team’s size.

1. Choose People Who Fit Your Company Culture

No matter how you hire your security team, the best team will match your company’s culture. For instance, in a more relaxed environment, you wouldn’t want a security team that’s so stiff that they can’t get along with any of your employees or vice versa.

Talk to candidates about their values and beliefs. See how they interact with employees. The same holds true if you’re hiring a security team for a residential area or gated community. When your security team is going to be working alongside everyone else, they all need to be on the same page.

2. Hire Only Those Who Understand Your Unique Security Needs

Every business, building and community has their own unique security needs. Hiring a generalized security team isn’t going to help you. For instance, putting together a team that’s only ever handled parking lot security, isn’t going to be helpful in a hospital.

Look for team members who are specifically trained in your niche. They’ll already know the weakest areas and what to watch for. They’ll also have a better understanding of your business, employees and customers.

3. Thoroughly Analyze Training And Background

This is the most important thing to consider when putting together a stellar security team. You have to be certain everyone has the proper training and background for what you’re asking them to do.

For instance, BOS Security only hires the best people and all our guards have law enforcement experience that’s augmented with additional training to be the most effective guards. The combination of experience and training are crucial to having a team you can count on when the worst happens.

4. Ensure Knowledge Of Emergency Protocols

A stellar security team knows how to act during emergencies. For instance, if an irate customer pulls out a gun, would they know how to handle the crisis while protecting everyone else in the room?

Talk to potential candidates about various emergency situations. Also, discuss any training and certifications they’ve had in relation to emergency situations in your niche. Once again, proper training is key.

5. Look For People Who Compliment Each Other

This doesn’t mean they give each other friendly compliments. Instead, it means they compliment each other’s strengths and weaknesses. For instance, one guard may be incredible at monitoring multiple screens at once, while another may be perfect for blending in with your employees and customers in a retail environment. Together, the two make a great team for catching shoplifters.

Don’t be afraid to discuss strengths and weaknesses. Use those to create a team that’s even stronger together.

6. Create A Team That’s Proactive

Finally, a stellar security team is one that is proactive. They don’t just wait for instructions. For instance, if a security guard notices a door that’s usually locked is suddenly ajar, they’ll immediately contact you to ask if it should be open or not. Until they hear from you, they’ll stay by the door to watch for suspicious activity.

They’ll also alert you of any potential security flaws. For instance, a gate with weak hinges could easily be broken by thieves and vandals. Instead of just guarding it, they’ll let you know how you can improve the security.

Think of your team as partners who not only guard but continuously work to create a safer and more secure environment.
