Security Technology: The Use of Drones in Commercial Security

drones

The commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), a.k.a. drones, has skyrocketed in the last several years. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is estimating that the commercial use of drones will increase from the 80,000 registered units in 2017 to more than 420,000 units by 2021.

It should come as no surprise that security drones have become a critical element in protecting commercial properties in Gainesville and throughout the state of Georgia. After all, what could be a better supplement to personnel on the ground than giving them a “bird’s-eye view” of a protected facility?

The potential for drone security services is vast. For instance, they can be used to monitor parking lots, college campuses, perimeters, prisons and stadiums. (Yes, drones were employed earlier this year as part of security operations for the Super Bowl.) They can be equipped with audio and video sensors, and they are useful both day and night with the addition of thermal imaging cameras.

In remote locations, drones can provide executive and route security, while monitoring remote assets and affording emergency relief. They can also be a part of facility risk management, damage evaluations and inspections.

Here are some of the details on the many ways that drones can assist a commercial security team:

Monitoring perimeters and parking lots.

Drones can help on-ground security personnel by observing the boundaries and parking areas of a commercial property. As mentioned, by adding a thermal imaging camera, it’s possible to monitor them at night, also.

Security drones can assess risks.

Security personnel can use drones to find vulnerable areas they would usually not see. By discovering these spots, they can place their security countermeasures and guards in strategic locations.

Securing remote areas and assets.

With the assistance of drone security services, it’s easier to secure remote areas. They can watch machinery and pipelines or keep an eye on animals in a distant pasture. Drones can also be utilized to protect executives as they travel to these areas by scouting the routes in advance and identifying potential trouble spots.

Emergency relief.

Drones have been sanctioned by the FAA to respond to hurricanes, finding people who needed help and later assessing the damage. They also assisted with the recent fires in southern California by gathering data for firefighters and emergency response teams. That same type of help could prove invaluable in the case of a fire, fight or violent intrusion in a commercial facility.

Drones can usually get to the scene of a fire, fight or find the intruder faster than an officer and can assess the risk without endangering the safety of an officer. They can also be programmed to tell the difference between gunfire and explosions, so they know whether to call the police or report the explosion.

Inspections.

Security personnel can inspect roofs and other high places safely from the ground by using drones.
