Company Founder, Nathan Carmack Receives Rotary International’s Highest Individual Honor

Founder of BOS Security, Nathan Carmack, recently received the Rotary International “Service Above Self Award” at the District 6910 annual conference held in Greenville, SC. This award is Rotary International’s highest honor, and it recognizes Rotarians who demonstrate Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, by selflessly volunteering their time and talents to help others. This prestigious international award was given to only seventy-five Rotarians this year from the 1.22 million Rotarians worldwide. Each of the 529 Rotary districts may nominate one Rotarian for the honor.  The award was presented by Rotary International President’s Representative Jim Eberly and District Governor Bruce Azevedo.  This award is not presented in recognition of one’s service in an elected office or in recognition of financial giving, it is intended instead to recognize continuing service to others through Rotary.   “He is the model of what we all hope to be as a Rotarian, and doing so on a global basis,” said District Governor Azevedo.

Carmack first joined the Athens Rotary Club in 1976.  The club elected him as the President of the club in 1999-2000.  During his tenure the club received the Significant Achievement Award for inducting the most members.  He received the Rotary District Service Award in 2005.  At the District level he served as District International Service Chair and District Membership Chair prior to serving as an Assistant District Governor for three years.  Carmack served as District Governor of District 6910 in 2007-2008.  During his tenure as Governor, the District’s membership and Foundation giving reached a level not surpassed for another five years.  He was a charter member of the Rotary International Haiti Task Force and was involved for twelve years.  Through his involvement Haiti received over $1,000,000 in aid.  Carmack has attended seven Rotary International Conventions on five continents.

His community involvement has included serving as a member of the Clarke County Board of Health, Jury Commission, the Regional Emergency Medical Services Committee and Athens Area Chamber of Commerce Board.  Carmack was recently active in the creation of the non-profit Athens-Clarke County Police Foundation to provide support to law enforcement personnel in our community.  He is a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and served as a Scoutmaster for Troop 3 in Athens, a leader of Troop 1 in Athens and as Scoutmaster of a contingent Troop of boys from North Georgia to the World Jamboree in Australia.  Nathan has been an active member of Athens First United Methodist Church for over fifty years.
