Does Your Contingency Plan Include Securing Your Facility or Assets?

For most people, a crisis is a time to pull together, to put the daytoday and petty squabbles aside and pool resources to work toward a common goal. But for others, it’s an unmatched opportunity – a chance to take advantage of unattended properties or those distracted by the Coronavirus or other events. How can you be ready for any security risk that can arise?

Establish a Security Committee

By gathering people from a variety of departments and levels of responsibility, you’ll have a variety of viewpoints. This can help to ensure that nothing slips through the cracks. A representative from accounting may focus on financial loss; an IT specialist may reveal cybersecurity vulnerabilities; an administrator may notice a variety of security risks from physical vulnerabilities to social engineering attempts.

Plan for Any Eventuality

The current situation with Coronavirus is not an event most people have planned for, but it’s not the only incident that can bring your business to a screeching halt. Power outages, floods, hurricanes, blizzards – any number of disasters could force you to operate remotely. How can you protect your building and assets while your building is empty?

Security Measures that can Protect Your Business

Egress protection. Add security features to your property such as steel security doorsfolding metal security gates if you have display windows. Walls, gates or fencing can be added to your perimeter.

Lighting. All-access points to the building should be well lit. Use timers or motion-activated lighting inside or outside the building. Motion activation can act as a deterrent to intruders while lighting the way for employees after dark to keep them safe.

Alarm systems. Remote security is often your best option in the event of a disaster. It enables someone to keep an eye on the property without placing anyone in harm’s way. Consider sensors that detect motion and breaking glass as well as security cameras that are monitored by a remote security team.

Off-site backup. Save data to the cloud or another secure location. If the building is totally destroyed, most businesses can still start over with access to backup data and records. Don’t cut corners when it comes to data security.
