What I Do Matters: Officers J. & E. Hilton

“On behalf of the Mayor and Commission of Athens-Clarke County, we want to recognize both of you for your bravery and heroic actions you took to save a young man’s life…. You both should be applauded for your actions in boldly saving the life of another without reservation or hesitation.

Please accept our heartfelt thank you for your heroic and selfless act.”

Every day security guards help to keep people safe, but at times situations arise in which guards step up to a challenge and go beyond what is expected of them. On December 12, 2020, Officers James and Elizabeth Hilton rose to that challenge and helped save a life. They were in the right place at the right time and quickly put their training and experience into use.

Saving a Troubled Student

On patrol just after midnight encountered two young women awaiting police to report that a man was about to jump off of the 8th-floor balcony. The officers contacted the police with the location and proceeded to the 8th floor to see a twenty-year-old male being restrained by another male. Breaking free, he ran into the stairwell and climbed over the 7th-floor parking deck’s ledge.

Jumping into Action

The officers observed him jumping over the edge of the building and grabbed his arms to prevent him from falling. He eventually cooperated with the officers who were able to pull him to safety and secure him until police arrived to take him for a psychological evaluation.

Making a Difference

Security Guards like Officers James and Elizabeth Hilton know that what they do matters. They protect people and give them the confidence and security to safely go about their daily activities. But every once in a while, a life and death situation occurs. That’s when training and experience come into play.

The BOS Security Difference

BOS Security professionals are experienced, vetted and receive the highest levels of training from certified instructors. The training we provide is customized to the situation an officer is likely to encounter on duty. Each officer’s experience, instincts and attention to detail are the greatest protection, which was the case here.

We’re so proud of the selfless actions of our officers, and how they inspire everyone in the community to look out for one another!
