A Day in the Life of a Transportation Security Officer

A female Transportation Security Officer operates security technology at Tupelo Regional Airport.

Transportation Security Officers are tasked with protecting flyers who come through over 450 airports in the United States. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Transportation Security Administration was created to improve and consolidate airport security in the United States.

BOS Security staffs Transportation Security Officers currently at Tupelo Regional Airport in Mississippi and Roswell Air Center in New Mexico. Airports can apply to employ private security agencies like BOS Security though the Screening Partnership Program. As a TSA approved agency, we train our Transportation Security Officers to follow all TSA policies and procedures with the efficiency of a private agency.

Private security agencies can maintain a higher level of accountability and quality of service for their screeners, as they can respond to incidents and act more quickly. Additionally, partnering with a private agency rather than sourcing officers through the TSA can also save on costs, lower employee turnover rates, and improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Transportation Security Officer Jobs

Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) are responsible for completing a variety of duties on each shift.
Job responsibilities include:

  • Operating different screening equipment and technology to identify potentially dangerous items in baggage, cargo, and/or on passengers to prevent the items from making it onto an aircraft
  • Performing searches and screenings of passengers and their belongings, which may include physical pat downs or property searches
  • Examining checked luggage through x-ray or hand searches if necessary
  • Controlling terminal entry and exit points
  • Interacting with the public, like giving instructions or answering questions
  • Retaining and implementing Standard Operating Procedures

Customer Service Roles

Not only is a Transportation Security Officer a security professional, but they are also a customer service professional. TSOs are required to interact with the public heavily, often encountering agitated travelers who may be running late or are made nervous by the TSA security measures. They need to be able to keep a level head when faced with angry or even aggressive flyers. A Transportation Security Officer needs to speak with authority while also remaining polite and adhering to TSA policies and regulations.
