Jobs in Security: Virtual Security Monitors

Commercial Building Surveillance and Security Cameras: A Guide For Owners in Atlanta

Thinking about a job in the security field, but not sure if it’s for you? Don’t forget that working as a virtual security monitor is an option. As a remote security guard, you’ll get to make use of your powers of observation, attention to detail, and interest in working a job that makes a difference in people’s lives. Best of all, you can perform your duties without needing to stand in the rain, cold or blazing sun.

What does it take to be a virtual security monitor?

You’ll need to be comfortable with computers and technology and able to enter data quickly and accurately. Remote guards need to be able to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment. To be successful in this job, you’ll need to be a good listener and customer-oriented. You should be a problem solver who’s not afraid to take the initiative when necessary and know how to prioritize. Experience in security, customer service, emergency dispatch, or the military could make you a good candidate, but you’ll need experience handling customer service requests, complaints, and problems.

What is it like to work as a remote security guard?

You’ll be trained on everything you need to know about remote guarding in general, your assigned post, and client instructions and preferences. In a typical workday, you will watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked. You’ll permit authorized persons to enter the property and observe as they leave to detect any theft of client property.

How can I handle security issues remotely?

For minor infractions such as rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, you will issue verbal warnings or notify on-site guards. For more severe issues such as fire, suspicious or criminal acts, or the presence of unauthorized persons, you will sound the alarm or call the police or fire department by telephone as the situation dictates. You will also be expected to record property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning machinery or equipment.
