What I Do Matters: Janet McBrayer

By: Salina Sanders

Janet McBrayer grew up in Booneville, Mississippi, and describes herself as a “homebody” who loves her job. She has two sons, two grandsons, and a granddaughter. She worked at the Tupelo airport for six years now, and in her opinion, there’s no better place to work.

When Janet applied for this job, she wasn’t sure exactly what it would entail. But, after she started training, she realized it was a great opportunity to further her knowledge. Janet also thought that down the road, it had the potential to turn into a prosperous career. She spends a lot of time working with people at the airport and sees it as the perfect chance to learn new things every single day.

A typical day for Janet starts in the early morning. First, she helps to prepare the bag check station and then they open up for the flights. Janet spends her days meeting different people, talking to them, and learning what they’re doing. She enjoys hearing all the different reasons people fly. According to Janet, “We have a small airport so we all know each other really well, and we get along great. It’s a very serious job, but when you have the atmosphere like we have here, it’s actually super fun. It definitely makes coming to work a lot easier.”

What’s the most rewarding part of your job? I would say the most rewarding part is at the end of the day when I go home knowing that I did my very best on my job. Knowing that I made sure that nothing went through that wasn’t supposed to, and that I kept people safe, and took care of them to the best of my ability is a great feeling. I think, how would I want my family to be treated when they fly? I would want them to be safe and protected, and when I go home knowing that I did that for someone else’s family, it’s very rewarding.

What I do matters because… It helps keep people safe so they can go home to their families every night. I mean, that’s really what it’s all about, right? We’re here to keep people safe. We want them to be able to go home at the end of the day and hug their kids or their spouse or their parents.

What are you most proud of at work? I’m most proud of our work ethic. In 2017, we were number one on our test scores. We always rate very high on that, and we all have a good work ethic. Nobody misses anything and we all love our jobs. A lot of times, people will come and tell us that this is the nicest and most courteous airport that they’ve been to and that they love the way we treat them. We have a fantastic work family and we’re all super close here, which makes the days good.
