What I Do Matters: Michael Lee

Michael was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He’s been married to his wife for twelve years, and they have one son together. He has been working with the state of Georgia for eighteen years as a felony probation officer, and he also works full time as a security officer with BOS Security in Athens. Michael is a very hard worker, clocking around ninety hours a week. When he does get the opportunity to enjoy some time to himself, he likes to go bow-hunting for deer.

Michael initially found out about the opening for a security officer through a referral from a friend. He initially wanted the job to gain better financial security, as well as so that he and his wife could have extra spending money to do things together. Now, he enjoys the work and takes pride in his ability to help keep the public safe.

A typical day for Michael involves a lot of walking. He currently works two nights a week at the Holiday Inn in downtown Athens, where he patrols the grounds, monitors cameras, and checks for maintenance issues. On the weekends he works at the Poultry Research Center, where he also patrols the grounds and monitors cameras, as well as performing compliance checks. One unexpected aspect of his job is customer service; Michael has to be able to communicate with guests, clients, and visitors in a way that makes them feel both welcome and safe.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job? I think, honestly, it just comes down to taking pride in what you do. Even though I serve a function by providing security and acting as a deterrent for bad behavior, doing a good job is my primary focus. I aim to be reliable, dependable, and to give 100% for what I do. I take pride in what I do. The result of that is that you get recognized for the work you do, and more importantly, you do a good job. Pride is the polish with which good work shines.

What I do matters because… I provide a vital service to my clients. I provide a safe environment, primarily, and I act as a deterrent to criminal behaviors. In today’s world, security is not really an option. People want and need to feel safe at work, on vacation, and in their hometown. My job is to make sure that they do.

What are you most proud of at work? I’m most proud of my ability as an individual to conduct myself in a professional manner and provide customer or client satisfaction. Like I said earlier, customer service is a big part of my job. Security officers don’t benefit anyone when they don’t have a good attitude at work, and it’s a point of pride for me to be able to show customers and clients that I can make them feel appreciated and safe at the same time.
