Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving our country. It offers an opportunity for us to reflect on the lasting impact of their sacrifice. From inspiring acts of service to strengthening our sense of community, the legacy of Memorial Day continues to shape and inspire us today.
What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day was established to honor the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In 1967, federal law declared the name “Memorial Day” the official name of the holiday. In 1971, it was officially recognized as a federal holiday to be observed on the last Monday in May. Memorial Day differs from Veterans Day, a federal holiday observed on November 11th each year. Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember those who died while serving in the military. Veterans Day is a day to honor and thank all veterans who have served in the military, living or deceased. Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I on November 11th, 1918. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor all veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Inspired by Sacrifice
Thinking of the sacrifice of those who lost their lives motivates some to serve the country and community in their own way. While military service is not for everyone, almost anyone can find a way to make a difference. People can give back by volunteering with veteran’s organizations, working in public service, or pitching in to help the community. Some look for ways to perform acts of kindness in their daily lives – like checking on an elderly neighbor, welcoming a new neighbor with a plate of cookies, or mowing the lawn for a friend who is sick or injured. Others might enjoy the camaraderie of participating in organizations that support the community, like the Atlanta Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity (following in the footsteps of one of Georgia’s most famous military veterans known for his volunteering, Jimmy Carter) or Hope Atlanta (In 2019, 21 out of every 10,000 veterans were homeless).
Remembering Through Service
In addition to inspiring acts of service, the legacy of Memorial Day has also strengthened our sense of community. The shared experience of honoring our fallen heroes and showing support for their families and loved ones brings people together in a meaningful way. It reminds us that we are all connected and that we have a responsibility to look out for one another. This sense of community extends beyond just Memorial Day and can be seen in how people come together to support each other in times of need.
BOS Security Provides Opportunities for Veterans
